UNRIG OUR ECONOMY NYC Demands Malliotakis Be Held Accountable For Rigging The Economy Against Working Women

UNRIG OUR ECONOMY NYC DEMANDS MALLIOTAKIS BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR RIGGING THE ECONOMY AGAINST WORKING WOMEN
New York, NY – Unrig Our Economy NYC joined officials and activists today to demand that New York City Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis stop siding with corporations over hardworking New Yorkers. Participants also demanded that Malliotakis stop rigging the economy against working women.
“The Inflation Reduction Act marks a historic victory for working people,” said Chris Fleming, spokesman for the Unrig Our Economy NYC Campaign. “It will improve the lives of New Yorkers struggling to afford health care, seniors unable to pay for their prescription drugs, and future generations from the devastating effects of climate change. Greedy corporations have been protected by politicians like Malliotakis long enough. It’s time to stand up for hardworking New Yorkers and make our voices heard!”
“Congresswoman Malliotakis represents a direct threat to working women and their reproductive health,” Rochelle Rodney, Director of Advocacy at the New York Birth Control Action Fund. “Malliotakis voted against codifying Roe while serving in the NY State Assembly and Congress, including after SCOTUS’ devastating Roe reversal destroyed years of progress in women’s rights. She then joined 194 of her House Republican colleagues in voting against legislation to guarantee the right to obtain and use birth control. Working women deserve to make their own health care decisions, not extremist politicians like Malliotakis.”
“I am alarmed to the degree to which working women are under attack in America, especially in the wake of SCOTUS’ devastating Roe reversal that destroyed years of progress in women’s rights,” said Rana Abdelhamid – Founder, Malikah and NY Muslim Organizing Collective. “Congresswoman Malliotakis has made crystal clear where she stands: no abortions and no birth control to prevent the need for one. Shame on her. Malliotakis seeks to create an undue economic burden on our most vulnerable communities – from travel costs to access to abortion services to healthcare costs related to unplanned pregnancies. Women deserve to make their own decisions about their lives, families, and futures.”
Recent polling shows strong, bipartisan support for expanding access to birth control: 71% of Americans say they support allowing birth control to be sold over-the-counter, and 84% say that expanding access to birth control is important with the Supreme Court set to overturn Roe v. Wade. Yet, Congresswoman Malliotakis joined 194 of her Republican colleagues in voting against the Right to Contraception Act.
