Once Again, Congresswoman Malliotakis Stands With Big Oil Over Constituents
Congresswoman’s Vote Shows How U.S. Economy Is Rigged, Controlled By Corporations & Puts Profits Ahead of People
May 19, 2022
(New York, NY) Today, Chris Fleming, Unrig Our Economy NYC spokesman, issued the following statement in response to Rep. Nicole Malliotakis’s vote against legislation aimed at curbing price gouging by oil companies (H.R. 7688 – The Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act):
“Rep. Nicole Mallotakis, who has taken nearly $120,000 dollars from the oil and gas industry, once again displayed unyielding loyalty today to her Big oil contributors instead of her constituents.
“The only thing more unconscionable than Rep. Mallotakis allowing Big Oil to gouge working families at the gas pump is that she does it to help her campaign. The hardworking people of New York 11th Congressional District deserve a representative that stands up to the rigged economy and corporate fat cats, not someone like Rep. Malliotakis, bought and paid for by them.
Today’s vote came amid reports of top U.S. corporations jacking up prices to enrich themselves and their investors at the expense of everyone else:
- In New York City alone last week, the average cost of a gallon of regular gas surged to $4.671 — the highest on record — with some individual stations charging more than $6, according to AAA data. Meanwhile, profits have surged to $41 billion in the first quarter for Big Oil companies and their CEOs, who’ve been bragging about their pandemic and war profiteering for months.
